Sukhoi Su-2: The Forgotten Forefather of Russia's Legendary Fighter Line
Eighty-five years after it first took to the skies as a bomber, the Su-2 remains one of history's most overlooked aircraft — and the origin point of the Sukhoi name.
On the morning of September 12, 1941, above the Ukrainian village of Anastasyevka, a lone Soviet light bomber found itself surrounded by seven German Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighters. Outnumbered and out of ammunition after shooting down one attacker, the pilot did the unthinkable: she rammed a second enemy fighter with her own aircraft, sending both planes tumbling to earth. The pilot was Senior Lieutenant Yekaterina Zelenko, and in that moment she became the first — and still the only — woman in history to perform an aerial ramming attack in combat. Her aircraft was a Sukhoi Su-2.
It was a fittingly dramatic epitaph for a machine that history has largely forgotten. Today, when the name "Sukhoi" is spoken, it evokes the Su-27 Flanker, the Su-34 strike fighter, or the Su-57 stealth fighter. But the entire lineage traces back to the Su-2 — the first airplane ever to carry the Sukhoi designation, a rugged, workmanlike bomber that was already obsolete by the time the war it was built for truly began.
A Stalin competition
The Su-2's story begins not at war, but in the corridors of the Kremlin. In 1936, Joseph Stalin released a requirement for a multipurpose combat aircraft. Codenamed "Ivanov," the machine had to be capable of performing reconnaissance and then attacking the targets it located — a sort of flying combination of scout, dive-bomber, and close-support platform. It was an ambitious brief for a Soviet aviation industry still short on light alloys and skilled labour.
Among the designers who answered the call was Pavel Sukhoi, then a senior figure working within Andrei Tupolev's design bureau, the OKB. Under Tupolev's tutelage, Sukhoi's team produced the ANT-51, a single-engine, two-seat monoplane that first flew on August 25, 1937, with test pilot Mikhail Gromov at the controls. Power came from a 820-horsepower Shvetsov M-62 air-cooled radial engine, and performance was underwhelming — a top speed of around 403 km/h (250 mph) at altitude. But the basic design was judged sound, and rather than discard it, the bureau simply gave it more power.
Re-engined with the 1,000-horsepower Tumansky M-87, the aircraft reached 468 km/h (290 mph), met the performance requirements, and was approved for production under the designation BB-1 — an acronym for Blizhniy Bombardirovshchik, or "short-range bomber." In 1940, as it entered squadron service, it was renamed the Su-2, officially stamping Sukhoi's name on the type and marking the birth of a design house that would eventually outlive its teacher, its competition, and the Soviet Union itself.
Built for quantity
The Su-2 was engineered with a single priority in mind: mass production. Its fuselage was a semi-monocoque structure of wood spars and plywood skin — cheap, easy to build, and easy to repair in the field. The wings, by contrast, were of duralumin and steel construction, carrying the heavy structural loads and housing the retractable landing gear, including the tailwheel. It was a pragmatic compromise typical of late-1930s Soviet practice, and it produced an aircraft that was tough, simple, and forgiving to maintain.
The two crewmen sat in tandem, protected by roughly 9 millimeters of armor plate behind the pilot and around the gunner. Armament centred on the rifle-calibre 7.62 mm ShKAS machine gun — a superb weapon for its weight, capable of a remarkable 1,800 rounds per minute. Standard fits included four fixed ShKAS guns in the wings, one on a flexible mount in the rear turret for the navigator-gunner, and, on many examples, a fifth gun firing through a hatch in the floor. Under the wings, four hardpoints could carry up to 600 kilograms (about 1,320 pounds) of bombs, while RS-82 and RS-132 unguided rockets could be slung for strafing attacks on armoured columns.
Propulsion evolved through the type's short life. The troublesome M-87 was soon replaced by the Tumansky M-88, and production-standard machines used the M-88B, a two-row radial in the 1,000-horsepower class that delivered a top speed of roughly 455–486 km/h depending on altitude. Tested at lighter weights with the improved engine, a Su-2 was clocked at an impressive 512 km/h. Range was around 1,100 kilometers, and the service ceiling sat between 8,400 and 8,900 meters — respectable figures for a 1940 light bomber, but figures that the war would quickly outpace.
Into the furnace
Production began in earnest at the end of 1939, and the type was formally introduced in December of that year. But the war the Su-2 was about to face bore no resemblance to the war it had been designed for. When Germany launched Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, roughly 100 Su-2s stood in front-line service. The aircraft was committed to unescorted daylight bombing raids against advancing German columns — a task for which its modest defensive armament and single rear gunner were dangerously inadequate.
The results were predictable and punishing. Massed German fighters, many of them cannon-armed, cut through the slow, unarmored bomber formations. Contemporary Soviet accounts record entire flights being shot down in the opening weeks of the campaign. Of the 910 Su-2s built before production ceased in 1942, some 222 were lost to combat — and many of those losses came in the catastrophic summer of 1941. The aircraft's rugged construction saved some crews, but the loss rate drove the type out of the bombing role within little more than a year.
Interestingly, modern analysis has been somewhat kinder to the Su-2 than wartime reputation suggests. A loss-rate comparison compiled by historians found that the Su-2 averaged 80 missions before being lost — significantly better than the Petlyakov Pe-2 (54 missions), the two-seat Ilyushin Il-2 (26), or the American-built A-20 Boston (19). The figures suggest the Su-2's crews were lost, in part, because they were asked to do a hopeless job in an obsolete way, not because the airplane was fundamentally fragile.
Retirement and second lives
By 1942 the Soviet air force had better tools: the Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik had arrived in quantity as a dedicated armored ground-attack aircraft, while the Pe-2 and the excellent Tupolev Tu-2 took over the bombing role. The Su-2 was withdrawn from front-line bombing and relegated to the missions it had originally been conceived for — reconnaissance and artillery observation. It soldiered on in these secondary roles until 1944, when the last examples were retired. Some were even pressed into service as emergency fighters during the darkest days of 1941–42, a desperate measure that said more about Soviet aircraft shortages than about the Su-2's capabilities.
Engineers made several attempts to extend the design's life. The ShB variant, a ground-attack development with a strengthened airframe, modified landing gear reminiscent of the American Curtiss P-40, and a heavier bomb load, was created in 1940 but never entered production — the Il-2 had already claimed the role. The Su-4, an upgraded version fitted with the more powerful Shvetsov M-82 radial, was built and tested as a single prototype; with duralumin in short supply, its wings were of wooden construction, and its armament was upgraded from four ShKAS guns to two heavier 12.7 mm Berezin UB machine guns. Despite promising results, it too was never mass-produced. Only 910 Su-2s of all types were built in total.
An enduring legacy
Though no complete original Su-2 is known to survive, and none remain airworthy, the type is preserved in museums across Russia. A Su-2 stands at the Volgograd Panorama Museum, site of the Stalingrad battle, while a reconstruction — of debated provenance — is displayed at the Central Air Force Museum at Monino, near Moscow. Another example has long stood at the Sukhoi design bureau itself, a reminder of where the company's story began.
That story, however, is most memorably told through Yekaterina Zelenko. A veteran of the Winter War with Finland — where, thanks to her Ukrainian surname, she slipped past personnel officers who assumed from "E.I. Zelenko" that she was a man, becoming the only female combat pilot of that conflict — she flew 40 sorties between June and September 1941. In July, leading a group of Su-2s, she helped destroy a German force of 45 tanks, 20 armored cars, and an infantry battalion with every aircraft returning safely.
On September 12, flying an unescorted reconnaissance mission over Anastasyevka, she and her wingman, Captain Lebedev, were bounced by seven Bf 109s. Lebedev was shot down immediately. Zelenko destroyed one Messerschmitt, exhausted her ammunition, ordered her wounded navigator, Lieutenant Pavlyk, to bail out — and then rammed a second fighter, killing herself and the German pilot. Both crews were lost; the villagers who witnessed the battle and later buried her remains confirmed the details only in 1943. Despite the bravery, she was recorded simply as missing in action for decades. It was not until May 5, 1990 — nearly half a century after her death — that Zelenko was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
The Su-2 itself has never received a similar rehabilitation in popular memory. It was a sound, sturdy airplane conceived for a war that did not happen, thrown into a war it could not survive, and outclassed within months by a conflict that moved too fast. But its importance is outsized: it was the first product of a design bureau that would go on to build some of the most formidable combat aircraft ever made. The Su-27, the Su-30, the Su-34, the Su-57 — every one of them descends, in name and in spirit, from Pavel Sukhoi's first and most unglamorous child, the bomber that history left behind.
